Accoya Color Grey – Decking Installation Guide (2022 PDF)

Back to All Resources

The Accoya Color Grey Decking Installation Guide (2022 PDF) provides complete instructions for installing Accoya’s pigmented Color decking line. This guide covers required substructure preparation, ventilation, stainless-steel fastening, spacing rules, hidden fastener compatibility, corrosion notes, cutting guidance, and long-term care.

Accoya Color Grey is a natural wood product that is fully colored through the board, resulting in a lighter-weight, dimensionally stable, barefoot-friendly decking option. As with all wood products, shade variation is normal, and the guide recommends mixing boards before installation to create an even visual blend. The manual also notes that fine cracks and natural weathering are expected as the material acclimates outdoors.

Substructure guidance includes choosing between pressure-treated wood framing or engineered steel joists. A moisture barrier or joist tape is required when using wood to prevent leaching and staining. When using steel framing, a full-width isolation barrier is required because Accoya Color Grey is corrosive to steel and galvanized components. Proper ventilation is essential—installers must maintain at least 3″–6″ of continuous airflow beneath the deck depending on airflow direction.

The guide outlines cutting recommendations using a carbide blade, and stresses the importance of using only stainless-steel screws (Type 304 for general use, Type 316 for coastal applications). Pre-drilling is required at board ends, with all screws driven at 90° to the deck surface. Hidden fasteners may be used when compatible with the board profile and groove depth, but must be matched correctly to avoid splitting the lower haunch.

Spacing requirements call for 1/8″ minimum gaps between boards in ventilated decks, and up to 1/4″ when perimeter airflow is limited. A 3/16″–3/8″ gap is required where decking meets fixed structures such as walls. The guide also recommends hosing down the deck after installation to remove fine dust from machining.

Maintenance recommendations include twice-yearly cleaning with a soft brush and mild detergent, avoiding high-pH cleaners, and never using a pressure washer. Additional FAQs cover stain removal, barefoot performance, end-sealing (not required for Color decking), and general care.
