Accoya Decking – Installation Guide (US PDF)

Back to All Resources

The Accoya Decking Installation Guide (US PDF) outlines the proper methods for installing Accoya® decking so the material performs to its full 50-year above-ground durability rating. This guide includes substructure requirements, ventilation rules, moisture-management details, fastening instructions, coating recommendations, and long-term care best practices.

Accoya decking must be installed on a properly ventilated structure with continuous airflow around and beneath all boards. The guide recommends a minimum 8″ clearance from grade, a fully supported joist system, and the use of moisture barriers or flashing tape on all horizontal framing surfaces. Adequate drainage and ventilation are essential to prevent trapped moisture from affecting both the frame and the decking.

Fastening instructions emphasize using only high-quality stainless-steel screws, installed at a 90° angle and at least ½” from all board edges. Pre-drilling and countersinking are required, and double-fastening at every joist ensures long-term stability. Hidden fastener systems may be used only when specifically approved by the manufacturer. All cut ends must be immediately sealed with an approved end-seal such as Accoya Color Seal or equivalent.

Expansion spacing and gapping requirements are outlined for board-to-board spacing, end joints, and transitions to fixed structures. Because Accoya absorbs and releases moisture differently than typical softwood decking, these spacing rules must be followed to maintain long-term dimensional stability.

Coating recommendations include using only high-quality breathable stains or paints, following manufacturer drying times, and avoiding film-forming products unless specifically rated for modified wood. The guide includes stabilization and maintenance notes for projects requiring a natural silver patina, as well as instructions for restoring coated surfaces.

Additional sections cover installing breaker boards, miters, edge details, and transitions at siding, fascia, and stairs. Care and maintenance guidelines include cleaning suggestions, seasonal inspection notes, and how to preserve coating life in high-exposure environments.
