ACRE Shiplap / Nickel Gap / V-Groove Siding – Installation Guide (2025 PDF)

Back to All Resources

The ACRE Shiplap / Nickel Gap / V-Groove Siding Installation Guide (2025 PDF) provides complete instructions for installing the full ACRE® Shiplap Collection. This guide covers shiplap, nickel gap, and v-groove siding profiles, along with critical details for fastening, expansion and contraction, finishing, vertical installation, continuous insulation, corner trim, and long-term care.

Installation begins with proper jobsite preparation. ACRE siding must be stored flat, kept dry, protected from heat, and acclimated for at least two hours before installation. Boards must be dry before fastening, and installers should inspect all material for shipping damage or irregularities.

ACRE requires a fully code-compliant wall assembly, including sheathing, weather-resistant barrier (WRB), flashing, and proper drainage. Flashing must follow all state and local building codes, especially at windows, doors, and rooflines.

For shiplap, nickel gap, and v-groove boards, installers must use approved fasteners only — minimum #8 × 2½” exterior screws or 8D × 2½” ring-shank nails, with 1½” minimum penetration into solid framing. Brads, trim screws, and staples are not permitted. Fasteners are driven through both the blind flange and face of the board, with additional face fasteners required for 1×10 boards.

Expansion and contraction guidelines are temperature-based:
• Below 35°F → 1/8″ gap
• 36–59°F → 1/16″
• 60–89°F → lightly butted
• 90°F+ → tightly butted
Darker colors (LRV <55) may require additional fastening due to heat gain.

The guide details horizontal and vertical installation methods, including starter strips, end-course ripping, butt-joint treatments, rabbeted trim usage, and recommendations for staggering joints. Vertical installation requires additional fastening (max 12″ on center) and careful trimming for symmetry.

A full section covers installing ACRE siding over continuous insulation, including diagrams for OSB/ply combinations, acceptable furring layouts, and maximum fastener spacing for ½”–1″ insulation systems. Installations thicker than 1½” require special review.

Finishing guidance includes using only water-based paints or stains with LRV 55 or greater, applying coatings flat for the best finish, and avoiding wood glues in favor of PVC or polyurethane adhesives. The guide concludes with long-term care, cleaning, and board-replacement instructions.
