The Deckorators Altitude Decking Installation Guide (PDF) provides complete instructions for installing Altitude™ wood-plastic composite deck boards in residential and light-commercial applications. The guide covers gapping requirements, joist spacing, surface fastening, hidden-fastener installation, cutting techniques, fascia attachment, stair construction, and ongoing maintenance.
Installation begins with material handling recommendations. Boards should be stored flat, acclimated to jobsite conditions, and inspected prior to fastening. Deckorators specifies the required tools—listed on page 1—including a drill set to 1500–1750 RPM, carbide-tip blades, and corrosion-resistant screws. Safety notes also advise using gloves, eye protection, and avoiding impact drivers (page 1).
Gapping instructions shown on **page 2** detail ¼” side-to-side spacing and temperature-based end gaps ranging from ⅛” to 5⁄16″. A minimum ¼” clearance must be maintained between boards and any permanent structure. Ventilation requirements call for at least 2″ of clearance between joists and grade, and blocking must be added every 4’–6′ to prevent movement.
Cutting recommendations on **page 4** include fine-tooth blades, jigsaws for openings, and trimming fibers with a utility knife. Fastener placement diagrams on **pages 4–5** show the ½” edge-spacing required for secure fastening in the thickest part of the board profile. Butt joints require additional blocking to support both board ends.
Hidden-fastener installation begins on **page 6**, using Stowaway clips placed at every joist. Each board must be pinned at its center point with a stainless steel screw (page 7) to control expansion while still allowing movement at the board ends. For butt joints, **page 8** demonstrates installing Stowaway clips over 8″ blocks at each board end.
Fascia installation guidelines on **page 9** outline screw spacing, pre-drilling requirements, and ⅛” expansion gaps at corners and butt joints. Stair installation on **pages 10–12** provides spacing rules for both unsupported and riser-supported stringers.
