The Deckorators Pioneer Decking Installation Guide (PDF) provides complete instructions for installing Pioneer™ mineral-based composite deck boards in residential and commercial applications. This guide outlines the framing requirements, temperature-based gapping rules, fastening methods, cutting recommendations, hidden-fastener installation, stair construction, and long-term care needed for a stable, durable deck.
The document begins with recommended tools and jobsite preparation. Boards must be stored flat and kept covered until installation begins. Deckorators notes that each Pioneer board has a unique appearance, and installers should lay out boards before fastening to achieve the preferred pattern and grain direction.
Joist-spacing tables are provided for standard, picture-frame, and diagonal installations. Residential installations require 16″ on-center spacing for standard and picture-frame layouts and 12″ on-center for diagonal layouts. Commercial applications require 12″ on-center spacing in all cases. Gapping charts outline the side-to-side, end-to-end, and end-to-structure spacing based on installation temperature, ensuring proper expansion and contraction.
Fastener guidelines include using corrosion-resistant 2-½” reverse-thread composite screws with at least 1-¼” penetration into joists. Two fasteners per joist are required, and all board ends must land on a joist. Butt joints require a double joist or added blocking for support. Face-fastening rules specify screw placement ⅜”–1″ from board edges and ends.
Hidden-fastener installation is supported through manufacturer-approved systems. Installers may route slots into the board edges when needed, following detailed diagrams. A “pinning” technique is recommended to control movement by securing each board at its center point.
Cutting instructions include using 40- to 80-tooth carbide circular blades, jigsaws for openings, and sanding or trimming stray fibers. Safety notes advise using dust masks, eye protection, and gloves.
Stair installation requires at least five stringers for proper support, a maximum 9″ stringer spacing, and a minimum 11″ tread depth. Gapping rules for stair treads are also included.
