Kebony Character Deck Surface – Installation Guide (PDF)

The Kebony Character Deck Surface Installation Guide (PDF) provides step-by-step instructions for installing Kebony Character decking using approved tools, fasteners, and framing practices. This guide outlines storage and preparation requirements, material behavior, metal-framing considerations, fastening rules, and cutting instructions to ensure long-term performance.

The document begins with safety guidelines, shown on page 2, reminding installers to use protective clothing, gloves, eye protection, and a mask when cutting wood. Installers are responsible for following local building codes and verifying that Kebony is suitable for the intended application. The storage section recommends keeping boards wrapped or covered prior to installation to prevent inconsistent fading and moisture exposure.

Metal-framing considerations (page 2) explain that while Kebony can be installed near aluminum and powder-coated surfaces, direct contact with exposed metal should be avoided. A butyl or G-tape barrier is recommended to prevent discoloration. The guide also notes that water runoff from Kebony may stain zinc or certain copper surfaces.

Key installation expectations appear on page 3. Framing must be square and level within ⅛”. Each board must be secured across at least two spans (meaning a minimum of three joists per board). Picture-framing boards and inline butt joints require additional joists or sistering for support and proper fastening.

Page 4 displays the required tools, including 72-tooth carbide blades, stainless steel trim-head screws, drills with carbide bits for pre-drilling, rubber mallets, levels, chalk lines, pry bars, miter saws, and CAMO or Pro Plug fastening systems.

Fastening rules on page 5 highlight that face fastening should be avoided when possible. Kebony strongly recommends CAMO edge fastening to maintain clean board surfaces and provide the required 3/16″ spacing. Only 304 or 316 stainless screws may be used, and self-tapping screws eliminate the need for pre-drilling except within 1″ of board ends and edges. Ripped or cross-cut boards must always be end-sealed.
