Lake Burton Retreat

McKinney Builders

Set along the shoreline of Lake Burton, this contemporary retreat reflects the distinctive vision of Lew Oliver Inc, whose architectural approach centers on clean lines, natural materials, and timeless forms that settle seamlessly into their surroundings. Working closely with designer Nikie Barfield, the team crafted a home that feels both modern and deeply connected to the landscape. To achieve that balance, the design relied heavily on Accoya® Grey—selected for its dimensional stability, consistent finish, and long-term performance in demanding lakefront conditions.

Barfield notes that the goal was to create “a soft, modern expression that still felt warm and livable.” Accoya Grey delivered exactly that, maintaining a uniform appearance while withstanding humidity, UV exposure, and seasonal moisture shifts.

Bringing the design to life, McKinney Builders managed the construction with a focus on precision and durability. Their team emphasized the importance of Accoya Grey’s stability, especially for a project exposed to constant environmental changes. In addition to cladding and soffits, McKinney Builders used Accoya Grey for custom exterior elements—including the outdoor kitchen cabinetry and vent hood—to maintain continuity across every vertical surface.

Beyond the home itself, Accoya Grey continues to define the property through the two-story boat dock, where it forms the exterior siding and ties the dock’s architecture back to the main residence. The dock decking is constructed from Ipe, chosen for its strength, slip resistance, and ability to withstand continuous exposure to water.

Across the landscape, Ipe decking connects each outdoor space—from multi-level terraces and breezeways to the dedicated Ipe swim platform dock extending into the lake. Its warm, rich grain contrasts beautifully with the cool silvers of Accoya Grey, creating a cohesive and inviting palette.

This project is also featured on Accoya’s website for those interested in learning more about material performance in waterfront applications.

From the architectural framework by Lew Oliver Inc to the craftsmanship delivered by McKinney Builders, the Lake Burton retreat is a showcase of how Accoya Grey and Ipe decking elevate both durability and design. TimberTown supplied all Accoya Grey components and Ipe decking, ensuring each material arrived precisely milled and install-ready for waterfront construction.
