What is Acetylation?
Wood naturally takes in and releases water as the weather changes. That’s what causes ordinary boards to swell, shrink, warp, and eventually rot. Acetylation changes the wood so it no longer absorbs nearly as much moisture.
First, the lumber is dried and placed inside a controlled chamber. A compound made from acetic acid, the same type of acid found in vinegar, is pushed deep into the wood using heat and pressure. It reacts with the parts of the wood that normally attract water, making them far less absorbent. The wood is then conditioned, cleaned, and checked for quality.
This isn’t a coating or treatment applied to the outside. The change goes all the way through each board, so it can’t peel, wash off, or wear away.
What comes out is still real wood. You can cut it, mill it, fasten it, and finish it like regular lumber. The difference is that it stays straighter, resists rot, and handles years of outdoor exposure without the usual wood problems.
