Underfoot. Overhead. All Ipe.

Ipe Decking and Custom Awning Complete a Modern Austin Backyard

This modern Austin, Texas residence, built by Oak & Stone, uses Ipe to bring warmth and continuity to a clean, contemporary design. The hardwood deck moves throughout the backyard, wrapping the pool and connecting lounge and entertaining areas into one cohesive outdoor space. Against the home’s light exterior and dark architectural details, Ipe’s rich natural color gives the space just the right amount of warmth.

That same material carries overhead. Austin Awning incorporated Ipe into the custom awning, extending the wood beyond the deck and turning it into an architectural detail of the home. It’s a smart use of material that helps the different outdoor areas feel connected. Austin Deck Company expertly handled the deck construction, bringing the design together from the ground up.

There’s also a practical reason Ipe works so well here. Around pools, decking has to handle far more than foot traffic. Constant moisture, intense Texas sun, and regular exposure to pool water all put the material to work. Ipe’s natural density and durability have made it a trusted hardwood for demanding exterior applications. It is naturally resistant to rot and decay and offers excellent longevity without relying on chemical treatment.

With proper care, Ipe can perform for decades. Its natural color can be maintained with routine oiling, or it can be allowed to weather to a silver-gray patina. Either way, this project shows why Ipe continues to make sense when the material needs to contribute as much to the architecture as it does to the performance of the space.
