Deckorators Surestone® Technology Composite Decking – Installation Guide (PDF)

Back to All Resources

The Deckorators Surestone Technology Composite Decking Installation Guide (PDF) provides complete instructions for installing Deckorators Voyage, Summit, Vault, and Excursion mineral-based composite decking. The guide outlines essential framing requirements, gapping rules, fastening methods, cutting guidelines, stair installation, and ongoing care.

Joist spacing recommendations vary based on layout. Standard and picture-frame installations require 16″ on-center spacing in residential settings and 12″ on-center in commercial applications. Diagonal installations require 12″ on-center spacing in all cases. Because mineral-based composites expand and contract with temperature, the guide includes detailed gapping requirements, with wider gaps used when installation occurs below freezing. Boards must also be spaced 1/4″ away from permanent structures.

Cutting instructions call for carbide-tipped 40T–80T blades, with a jigsaw required for openings or areas a circular saw cannot reach. For finishing, a utility knife, medium-grit sandpaper, or a file may be used to clean up edges and remove stray fibers. Installers must avoid pulling any protruding strands; instead, trim them cleanly.

Fastener requirements specify corrosion-resistant composite deck screws, reverse-thread screws, or manufacturer-approved hidden fasteners. Two fasteners per joist are required, and the guide shows proper spacing—3/8″ to 1″ from board edges and ends. Double joists or blocking are required at butt joints. Hidden fasteners may be used when compatible with routed slots.

Stair installation requires five stringers to meet code, with 9″ maximum spacing and 11″ minimum tread depth. A minimum 1/8″ gap between tread boards is required, with some jurisdictions requiring larger gaps.

The guide also addresses mold and mildew prevention, noting that buildup is environmental and not a material defect. Regular cleaning with mild detergent helps reduce organic debris, pollen, and spores. Additional sections include snow-removal tips, mold-inhibitor recommendations, and proper handling and storage techniques.
