The guide begins with acclimation and handling notes. Boards must be stored on a flat surface and allowed to reach jobsite temperature before installation. Deckorators highlights several safety guidelines, including proper tool selection, avoiding impact drivers, and maintaining specific RPM and torque settings during fastening.
Gapping tables outline the required side-to-side and end-to-end spacing, which varies depending on installation temperature. Installers must also leave a ¼” gap between the decking and any permanent structure. The joist-spacing section specifies 16″ on-center spacing for standard installations and 12″ when installing diagonally or for commercial applications. Blocking is required every 4–6 feet to reduce movement and improve stability.
Cutting recommendations include carbide-tooth blades, jigsaws for detailed cuts, and sanding or trimming for any exposed fibers. Fastening guidance includes surface fastening with corrosion-resistant composite screws placed ½” from each board edge. Butt joints require additional blocking, and screws must be installed 1½” from board ends.
Grooved-board installation uses the Stowaway hidden-fastener system. The guide demonstrates how to secure the first board, set each fastener at 90 degrees, maintain a ¼” side gap, and “pin” each board at its center point to allow controlled expansion and contraction.
