Thermory Shingles – Installation Guide & Product Overview (2024 PDF)

Back to All Resources

The Thermory Shingles Installation Guide & Product Overview (2024 PDF) provides a complete look at Thermory’s thermally modified Ash shingles and how to install them for long-term performance. With a resawn surface and rich brown color throughout the full board thickness, these shingles bring warm texture to both exterior and interior walls. The guide outlines how the shingles naturally weather to a platinum grey outdoors and how color variation is a normal trait of real wood.

Installation begins with fastener selection. The guide specifies stainless steel Type 316 fasteners within 15 miles of salt water and either Type 304 or 316 in other regions. Nails must be narrow-gauge, blunt-tip ring shank, while staples require a minimum 7/16″ crown. Fasteners must penetrate the sheathing by at least half an inch for a secure hold.

Thermory requires shingles to be installed over a drainage plane using a rainscreen mat or furring strips to ensure proper ventilation. When using wooden furring strips, they must be applied in two layers—vertical first, with horizontal strips on top—to create a continuous air channel that supports drainage and drying.

All shingles must be installed with the resawn face outward. The backside may contain marks or imperfections that are considered acceptable. Installation always begins at the bottom course and works upward. The first course must be a double layer, offset so joints do not align, with a maximum 5.5″ exposure. Subsequent courses also require a 1/8″ gap between shingles and fully offset joints to avoid alignment across rows.

Installers must ensure that no joints in three consecutive courses line up, preventing moisture pathways and creating a visually consistent layout. A horizontal guide line helps maintain alignment across each row.

Product specifications, including available widths, bundle coverage, exposure limits, and board thicknesses, are included in the guide so installers can calculate material needs accurately.
