Soffits That Steal the Show

Western Red Cedar Brings Warmth to a Tennessee Outdoor Retreat

Built by Stone Ridge Custom Homes, this covered outdoor retreat uses Western Red Cedar to bring warmth, texture, and natural character to a clean modern design. Installed across the soffits and carried onto select walls and recessed niches, the cedar creates a strong visual contrast against the light limestone. Its natural shifts in color and grain keep the expansive space from feeling too uniform while tying its different areas together.

Designed for year-round use, the structure functions as a true extension of the home. An outdoor kitchenette, fireplace, generous seating areas, integrated lighting, built-in heaters, and a dedicated television niche make it equally suited for entertaining or settling in for a quiet evening. Beyond the covered space, the pool and surrounding greenery open to scenic Tennessee views that become part of the experience.

Western Red Cedar is especially well suited for soffits and other overhead applications. It is naturally lightweight and dimensionally stable, making it easier to work with while helping the finished installation maintain its appearance as conditions change. Cedar also offers natural resistance to moisture and decay—an important advantage in an exterior space exposed to heat, humidity, and changing weather.

Cedar can be finished to help preserve its vibrant color or allowed to weather naturally to a soft silver-gray. Either approach retains the grain and variation that make Western Red Cedar so distinctive. Here, the material does more than finish the ceiling. It draws the eye through the space, softens the surrounding stone, and gives the entire outdoor retreat a sense of warmth and continuity.
