Boardwalks Worth the Trip

TimberTown’s Summer Travel Destination Guide

Outdoor boardwalks, piers, and elevated walkways shape how we experience some of the most visited places in the world. This summer, we’re highlighting standout destinations where design, materials, and location come together to create memorable outdoor spaces worth visiting.

Chattahoochee Nature Center Boardwalk

Roswell, Georgia

The Chattahoochee Nature Center Boardwalk winds through wetlands, marsh habitats, and forested bottomland along the Chattahoochee River. It is used for educational programming, wildlife observation, and peaceful nature walks just outside the city. The boardwalk is built with pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine and Fiberon decking, supplied by TimberTown Atlanta, chosen for its durability in a flood-prone environment and its ability to withstand consistent foot traffic while blending into the surrounding natural landscape. Georgia is a great summer destination for outdoor recreation, offering shaded nature trails, river access, and lush green scenery that make it ideal for slow-paced, outdoor exploration during warmer months.

High Line Park

New York City, New York

The High Line is a 1.5-mile elevated public park built on a former freight rail line in Manhattan. It combines landscape architecture, public art, seating areas, and walking paths into a continuous greenway above the city streets. While the park's main walkways are constructed with custom concrete paving, Ipe hardwood is used throughout the seating areas, benches, lounge platforms, and gathering spaces. The durable tropical hardwood was selected for its ability to withstand heavy public use and year-round exposure while maintaining a warm, natural aesthetic in an urban environment. New York City is an ideal summer destination thanks to its energy, outdoor events, global food scene, and constant activity. High Line offers a unique way to experience the city from above.

Coney Island Boardwalk

Brooklyn, New York

The Coney Island Boardwalk runs along the Atlantic Ocean and connects beaches, amusement parks, restaurants, and entertainment in one of America’s most iconic coastal destinations. Over time, various sections have incorporated tropical hardwoods such as Ipe due to their durability in high-traffic, salt-air environments and their resistance to moisture and decay. The boardwalk is designed to handle constant seasonal use while maintaining its role as a central gathering place for visitors. Coney Island is a classic summer destination, offering beach access, rides, food vendors, and ocean views that capture the nostalgic energy of a traditional seaside experience.

Atlantic City Boardwalk

Atlantic City, New Jersey

The Atlantic City Boardwalk stretches 5.5 miles along the New Jersey coastline and is widely recognized as the first boardwalk in the United States. It remains a major destination for beaches, casinos, shopping, and entertainment, drawing visitors year-round. The boardwalk has historically been constructed with pressure-treated lumber and has incorporated hardwoods such as Ipe and Cumaru in upgraded and replacement sections to withstand coastal weather, salt air, and constant pedestrian traffic. Atlantic City is a strong summer destination thanks to its beachfront access, nightlife, live entertainment, and long-standing history as one of the country’s most recognizable coastal promenades.

South Pointe Park Pier

Miami Beach, Florida

The South Pointe Park Pier sits at the southern tip of Miami Beach and offers sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, cruise ship channels, and the surrounding coastline. The pier is constructed with Ipe hardwood decking. Chosen for its density, strength, and resistance to humidity, salt exposure, and heavy foot traffic in a coastal environment. Miami is a popular summer destination for its beaches, outdoor dining, water activities, and vibrant nightlife. Making the pier a standout example of how durable materials support high-traffic public spaces in extreme coastal conditions.

Ponce City Market

Atlanta, Georgia

Ponce City Market is a vibrant destination filled with restaurants, shops, and entertainment. Housed within the historic Sears, Roebuck & Co. building, the property has been thoughtfully transformed into a modern mixed-use development while preserving much of its original character. The market is connected to the Atlanta BeltLine, a multi-use trail system that links neighborhoods throughout the city using former railroad corridors. TimberTown Atlanta and OHC were proud to supply Ipe hardwood decking for a portion of the BeltLine adjacent to Ponce City Market. As well as for Skyline Park, the rooftop attraction featuring mini golf, carnival-style games, rides, and panoramic views of Atlanta. With great dining, unique attractions, and outdoor experiences, Ponce City Market is a destination worth visiting during the summer months.
