Choosing the right coating

The coating should match the wood, application and level of exposure—not just the desired color.

Solvent-based ProCoat penetrates deeper into the wood and provide greater resistance to wear and scratching. They are a strong choice for decking, walkways, high-traffic areas and demanding exterior or commercial applications.

Water-based ProCoat sits closer to the wood’s surface and are a practical option for siding, soffits, ceilings and covered residential spaces. They are typically more cost-effective than and make future maintenance easier.

Texture changes the finished result

Surface preparation plays a major role in how the wood looks, feels and takes a coating.

Smooth finish maintains a clean, refined surface while allowing the wood’s natural grain and character to remain visible. It works well when the design calls for a more precise, contemporary appearance.

Brushed finish adds subtle texture, softens minor surface blemishes and brings greater definition to the grain. The result feels natural and dimensional without becoming overly rustic.

Textured finish uses deeper brushing to create a more pronounced surface. It emphasizes variation in the grain and gives siding, soffits and other architectural applications greater movement and character.

The right treatment depends on the species and the design intent. Dense hardwoods, softwoods and modified woods each respond differently to preparation and coating. Our team in Austin, Atlanta, or Nashville can help determine which combination will produce the most consistent result for the application.
