Durability & Moisture

Which decking brand offers better long-term durability: TimberTech or Trex?

Both TimberTech and Trex decking are engineered to last for decades and come backed by comprehensive warranties. However, TimberTech Advanced PVC and four-sided capped Composite collections deliver superior moisture resistance, making them the ideal choice if you live in coastal, humid, or moisture-rich environments.

How does TimberTech mold and moisture resistance compare to Trex?

In general, TimberTech provides superior options for moisture and mold resistance. Because their Advanced PVC material contains no wood or organic fillers, it won't absorb the moisture that causes rot, mold, or mildew. Furthermore, TimberTech collections with four-sided capping deliver 360° moisture protection. Trex currently only offers composite decking with three-sided capping.

Look & Color

Which brand has a wider range of color options?

Both TimberTech and Trex offer a wide selection of colors to choose from. However, TimberTech leads with 39 colors in their PVC and capped composite collections. These options include natural wood tones as well as modern hues such as grey, reds, and blues. On the other hand, Trex offers 32 colors in their composite collection.

Which brand delivers the best real wood look and color variety?

TimberTech is often regarded as having the most real wood look on the market, though the final choice ultimately comes down to your personal style. By the numbers, TimberTech Decking gives you 39 colors across 13 style collections. Trex offers 32 colors across six collections.

Composite vs. PVC

What is the difference between capped composite and PVC decking?

Capped composite decking combines wood fibers and polymers to make up the core of the deck board, then protects the board with an all-polymer cap. PVC decking eliminates wood fibers altogether in the deck board core, making the entire board polymer-based and delivering the highest level of moisture resistance and long-term durability.

Which deck boards remain cooler in the sun?

All composite and PVC decking absorbs heat when exposed to direct sunlight. However, lighter colors naturally reflect more sunlight and stay cooler than darker shades, which tend to absorb heat.

Design Flexibility

Which decking allows for greater design flexibility?

TimberTech offers exceptional flexibility for your custom deck design through a wider variety of multi-width boards. While Trex’s Transcend collection comes in standard (5.5") and narrow (3.4") widths, TimberTech Vintage Collection is available in standard (5.5"), wide (7.25"), and narrow (3.5") widths. The TimberTech Harvest Collection also comes in standard and wide options. Additionally, TimberTech Advanced PVC Decking is much easier to heat-bend for striking curved designs and intricate inlays.

Maintenance, Warranty & Sustainability

How do maintenance requirements compare between TimberTech and Trex?

We know you want to spend time enjoying your deck, not maintaining it. Both TimberTech boards and Trex decking are incredibly easy to care for, requiring just a simple routine cleaning with a brush and deck cleaner. With either choice, you will never need to worry about sanding, sealing, or staining again.

Who provides the better warranty?

TimberTech offers industry-leading, comprehensive warranties, and Trex provides comparable coverage. TimberTech Advanced PVC is protected by a Limited Lifetime Product Warranty and a 50-Year Fade & Stain Limited Warranty. TimberTech Composite lines are backed by 25- to 30-Year Product and Fade & Stain Limited Warranties. Trex provides a 25-50-year Residential Warranty and a 25-Year Fade Warranty.

Which brand is the more sustainable choice?

Both brands prioritize sustainability to help protect the environment. TimberTech is manufactured with up to 85% recycled content, while Trex uses up to 95%. However, TimberTech Advanced PVC Decking is fully recyclable at the end of its lifespan through the manufacturer's FULL-CIRCLE Recycling Program®, making it the greenest PVC on the market.

Fire Ratings

Does TimberTech provide higher fire resistance ratings?

Overall, yes. Both brands feature collections that are WUI Compliant and hold Class A, B, or C Flame Spread Ratings, alongside Ignition Resistant designations. However, TimberTech offers more options with the highest safety ratings. Their Advanced PVC line features three collections with a Class A Flame Spread Rating and two with an Ignition Resistant designation, compared to Trex’s one collection with these specific ratings.
